Hawaiian Artist Garry Palm's Plumerias
Honeymooning in Hawaii in 1985, Garry and his wife Cynthia fell in love with the vibrant colors of the islands. Back in their Minnesota home they began dreaming of moving to Hawaii. Returning to the Islands in 1987, already accomplished in oils and acrylics, Garry expanded his artistic expertise and studied the watercolor medium. He began to record Hawaii’s historical buildings and the abundance of tropical flowers in glowing watercolors, fast becoming one of Hawaii’s most sought after artists.
Garry became a “household” name in Hawaii when he was selected by GTE to create the artwork for the 1995 edition of the Hawaii phone book. The popular cover, depicting over 20 orchid varieties grown in the State, can still be found, framed in galleries and gift shops.
Garry continues to create glowing, translucent watercolors of the island’s most beloved blossoms and leis (flower garlands): Plumeria, Gardenia, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Bird Of Paradise, Ginger, Heliconia, Pikake, Crown Flower to name a few. He also finds pleasure in re-creating in his own style the Vintage art of the 1930′s and 40′s, portraying Pin Up Girls.
The large watercolors have been reproduced in editions of prints, as greeting cards, Giclée prints, and on product packaging.Garry’s realistic, distinctive watercolor style draws the viewer’s attention into the depths and details of the painting. Working in his Mililani studio, he spends up to 40-50 hours applying the colors layer by layer, and building his paintings very slowly until completion.
Garry had numerous works accepted in local and national juried art exhibitions, winning a variety of awards, including Best of Show. The beauty of bright, tropical florals has universal appeal, and his paintings are part of private and corporate collections around the world. King’s Village Plaza in Waikiki features a mural near the entrance, completed by Garry in August 2000.
Pacifica Island Art is proud to feature Garry’s art prints in the ARTIST SHOWCASE section and also publishes his images on greeting cards, postcards and gift items.
Aloha from the Islands of Hawaii, and don’t forget to smell the perfume of the flowers!
